The History of the Golden Eagle

Situated right on the boundary of Burham Village, half-way between Rochester and Maidstone, the Golden Eagle commands impressive views over the Medway Valley and surrounding countryside. Built around 1850, it was originally named the "First & Last" - first as travellers went into the village and last as they left. After a very brief period as the "Tudor Rose", it was bought by a Malaysian businessman in 1979 and he re-named it the "Golden Eagle" - after the legendary bird of good fortune. And so it is for anyone choosing to eat in the superb Oriental restaurant!

The village of Burham sits astride the old Pilgrim's Way, the ancient route along the Downs linking the cathedral cities of Winchester and Canterbury. The village has a rich history that can be traced back to Roman times and is mentioned in the Domes Day Book. Walkers and historians alike use the Golden Eagle as a starting point to walk the Downs or study the ancient Kits Coty stones, believed to mark a Neolithic burial site. Naturally the Eagle is also an excellent place to end the day with much-needed sustenance!
